How to Import PST File into Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free and open-source email client developed by Mozilla foundation. It has many features like personalized email address, one-click address book, quick filter toolbar, activity manager, IMAP/POP support, RSS support, quick message search, phishing protection, etc.

Microsoft Outlook, on the other hand, is a paid email client which works on PST file format. Since Thunderbird is a free email application, hence people are migrating from Outlook. For doing that it is needed to import PST file into Thunderbird to retrieve all the data.

Methods to import PST file into Thunderbird

Method 1: Directly by using Outlook and Thunderbird

  • Install Microsoft Outlook and Thunderbird.
  • Now launch MS Outlook.
  • Go to the File menu.
  • Now click on Open and Export and then select Import/Export.
  • In the Export and Import Wizard click on Export to a File and then Next.
  • Now choose Personal Folder File(.pst) and click on Next.
  • In the Export Personal Folders select the folder from where to export the .pst file and then click on Next.
  • Click on the browse button and select the location where you want to save the file.
  • Click on File name box and save the exported .pst file in name of your choice.
  • After importing emails, open Thunderbird and click on Tools.
  • Now go to Import.
  • Click on Mail within Thunderbird.
  • Select MS Outlook as the default client.
  • Open MS Outlook in another computer.
  • Copy .pst file in the new system.
  • In Outlook, go to the File menu.
  • Click on Import/Export.
  • Now select Import from another program or file and click Next.
  • Select the file type which you want to import from and click on Next.
  • Choose the .pst file which you have copied in the new system from Browse button and then click Next.
  • All the files will be imported in the Outlook installed on the new system.
  • For importing the files of Outlook in Thunderbird in the new system, open Thunderbird.
  • Click on Tools, then select Import.
  • Now press the Mail button and click on Next.
  • Select Outlook and click on Next.
  • After the import of files click on Finish.
  • After closing Thunderbird, open This PC and go to Local Disk(C:)/Your-username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles.default. Copy all the files and paste it to the same location in the old computer.
  • In this way, the .pst file will be imported from Outlook to Thunderbird.

Method 2: Import PST file into Thunderbird using Gmail

In this method, configure Gmail account to MS Outlook and then export Outlook emails to Gmail account. After that Outlook, PST file can be imported to Thunderbird by configuring that Gmail account.

  • Open Gmail and log in to your account.
  • Now go to Settings and click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  • Next, Choose Enable IMAP and Save the changes.
  • Launch Microsoft Outlook.
  • Go to the File menu.
  • Click on the Add Account button.
  • Enter the credentials of Gmail account logged in before in the add account new windows.
  • In the File menu, choose Import/Export.
  • Now select Import from another program or file and click Next.
  • Choose the Outlook Data File(.pst).
  • All the files will be imported in the Outlook.
  • Copy this .pst file to the Gmail folder and then Outlook data will be saved in the Gmail account.
  • Launch Thunderbird.
  • Go to the File menu and click on New button.
  • Click on Existing Mail Account.
  • Set up an existing mail account using Gmail account information.
  • Enter your login credentials and click on continue.
  • Now Gmail account is configured to the Thunderbird and Outlook PST file is imported into Thunderbird.

Method 3: Using professional software
